Lago de Atitlan, Panajachel

We had our own personal driver and van deliver us from Guatemala City to Lago de Atitlan. Along the way were the usual market stands.
These are some type of fruit called chilecayote...not sure of the spelling?? The driver said they were used for "Dulces" which are sweets...but we never did get to try them. Looked like big watermelons or squashes to us.
In Panajachel, our home base in this area, we stayed in this room and Dan and Lorraine (Zephyrus) were next door. We were on the top floor, and the room cost us about $35 a night. It wasn't great, but not bad either and had a great view of the lake.
This is to prove that Ralph actually accompanied me on this journey. He takes a lot of the photos and usually isn't in any.
This was the view from our place. The lake is in the sunken crater of an old volcano and is surrounded by other extinct volcanoes.
It WAS a great view!!
We went for a walk, in the evening, down by the lake. The water was a gorgeous, clear green. Don't know about this dock though! We thought they weren't being used...but when we took a boat trip across the lake, guess where we left from?
It was a fairly high altitude here, so it was chilly at night. We weren't used to that...but it was a refreshing change from 30 plus in Barillas.
Here we were introduced to the Mayan sales pitch! Let me tell you, the Mexican hawkers on the beach cannot hold a candle to these ladies!! They just don't give up!
Lorraine made the mistake of looking a little too hard at something she didn't have any intention of buying. We had quite a time escaping! Eventually, when we thought we were safe after walking and saying no a hundred times, we went into a restaurant down the street. Within 10 minutes, they found her and came into the restaurant to try again!
I took these two photos to show the mixture of dress in this country. The traditional Mayan outfits (all of them different colours and embroidery depending on the village or area) are worn right along-side western dress.
