The dishwasher in the indoor veggie market.
They also had some stalls selling embroidery thread and trim.
These are what the women make with all that thread.
It was a busy place!
Here is the tour guide, with Dan and me, explaining bits and pieces about the market.
If you want it...they make it.
There were a lot of stands, outside, selling fruit by the slice. Very colourful!
Somewhere in that ladies wrap is a baby, most likely!
All ages were involved in the selling and purchasing.
Nothing but colour from one end to the other...a feast for the eyes and tummy!
While we're selling something, let's embroider something else...no time is wasted.
It must be so uncomfortable sitting on the hard concrete...but no one is complaining. I'd never be able to get back up!!
The stairs of the church. Flowers are sold here for offering to the gods. It is a Catholic/Mayan church with alters for both. The Mormons aren't well thought of here because they don't allow the Mayan to worship in their own way.
A riot of colour!
Masks and more masks.
Lots of masks that were reminiscent of our own First Nations groups.
The traditionally made, and also the expensive ones are coloured with dyes made from the flowers of impatiens. The flowers are heated to make other hues.
We had a tour of a traditional Mayan house. This is a Sauna...and they call it that. It is used for the men, after a hard days work and...get this, for women who are giving birth. When the time has come, they go in here and sweat out the baby!! Can't think of anything less appealing, myself!! If I recall, you have your own little furnace going for the whole pregnancy, and you sweat enough during the birth without adding "fuel to the fire"!!!
The Mayan alter in the home.
This is our tour guide showing us the fine art of playing the marimba.
Mayans have all different kinds and colours of corn. These are some of them.
I couldn't resist this shot...kids will be kids! Mom has to sell, they have to "hang" out!
After the market, we wandered through one of the local expensive hotels. Bird of paradise could be a weed here.
Another view of the hotel.
Another view.
A kids' band was playing in the courtyard.
Looking down the street toward the cemetery. There was no shortage of huge monuments.
We finished up with a meal in a local restaurant. The food was great...but I just loved the waiter! He couldn't have been more than 12 or 14! But, boy did he hustle!!
