Inland to Guatemala City Mar./Apr. 2008

On Tuesday March 25th, after prepping Fortuitous, we took a chicken bus to San Salvador and then a "real" bus to Guatemala City. As always, the chicken bus proved to be quite an experience for us. We couldn't get over the amount of garbage along the roadsides in El Salvador...and quickly found out why. The busker on the chicken bus filled a plastic pail with cold cokes etc. from a cooler in the front of the bus. This cooler was full of filthy water...thank God he handed out straws too (although when he had a pop himself, he zipped and drank without wiping the top...YUCK!! But, that's not the worst of it!!! After the people drank, they ALL threw the cans out the windows or doors or threw them on the floor of the bus. Turns out that the bus was self-cleaning as the cans on the floor rolled under our feet and out the front door! We arrived too late in Guatemala City to head onward. So, we asked the bus rep if there was a good place to stay. He drove us to this lady's bed and breakfast. Evelina was also a tour guide and by morning had arranged our entire trip!

This is the living room of her home. Lorraine and I are awaiting our glass of wine!
This is the outside of the home...all very secure. She maintains that Guatemala city is very unsafe and I'm sure it is, judging by the amount of poor people. That being said, we have nothing but good things to say about the people outside that city. All were friendly, helpful and honest and we never felt the slightest bit worried. Guatemala was also much cleaner than El Salvador and the food was great!
We walked around a bit in Guatemala City (in the rich area where we were housed) in order to find an ATM. These flower vendors seemed to be everywhere in this country. Kind of reminded me of Chile, in that way.
