New Years 2008

Ecuador has several unusual customs for New Years. They eat 12 grapes at midnight, wearing yellow (especially underwear) is good luck, and they make and sell the paper mache figures, below, all over town. There were fireworks at 10 and then people ate dinner and got ready for the rest of the festivities.
We especially liked this group and focussed on them at midnight. They were dragged across the street, people beat the hell out of them, and then they were set afire. Seems like such a waste but they are "Anos Viejos" or "Old Years" and that is their fate.
We had already eaten our BBQ'd chicken, with fellow cruisers Dan and Joan from Mainly, and Carol and Dave from Nuage. Otherwise, this street food looked great.
Mr. Incredible in the back of a truck.

Here is the crew out and about trying to stay up till midnight. We stopped for a not very good ice cream here.
This motorcycle had one "Ano Nuevo" on the back,
And one on the front!

Wishing you and yours a Very Happy New Year! We leave Bahia on Jan. 7th. Next post on the way to Panama or upon arrival.

Rae and Sharon love the idea of beating and burning the hell out of the old year to welcome the new one! Wonderful tradition you have shown us. We are going to try it out next year!
